Brick Repointing

Brick repointing, also known as mortar pointing, reinforces strength and stability whilst providing an aesthetic boost to your brickwork.

Mortar Pointing

Repoint and protect your brickwork

Brick repointing is a vital process in maintaining the health and appearance of brick structures. Over time, the mortar between bricks can degrade due to weathering and environmental factors. Repointing involves removing the old, damaged mortar and replacing it with new mortar to restore the integrity of the masonry. This process not only strengthens the structure but also improves its aesthetic appeal, ensuring your building remains sturdy and visually pleasing for years to come.

  • What is mortar?

Contemporary mortar is sturdy and cement-like. In contrast, historical mortar was made with lime, which is porous and degrades quickly. Exposure to the weather, dampness, and time can cause structural issues due to the crumbling and loosening of bricks.

Other factors that can contribute to mortar degradation include poorly mixed mortar, poor quality mortar, leaking pipes or gutters and mortar additives used during construction. If left untreated, it can cause extensive, if not irreparable, damage and decrease the value of the property.

  • What is Brick Repointing?

Brick repointing is the precise and highly specialised process of repairing or replacing the mortar between existing brickwork. Engaging a highly trained and experienced mortar pointing specialist is key to preserving the existing brickwork!

The delicate process of mortar pointing starts with an inspection of the brickwork. We look for signs of damp, loosened bricks, loosened or missing mortar. A mortar mixture is created to Australian standards (AS3700) and closely matched to the existing mortar. The existing mortar is then carefully removed via precision vacuum grinding and replaced with an injection of the new mortar mixture.

  • Can brick repointing be applied to all brickworks?

Brick Pointing can be applied to any brickwork, from historical restorations to contemporary masonry. It is best to address any mortar issue straight away to ensure that structures remain timelessly sound and strength is not compromised. If the brickwork on your property needs the delicate hand of craftsmen focused on a seamless quality finish, let us help you achieve this.

  • What is the difference between tuckpointing and mortar pointing?

Tuckpointing and repointing are essential masonry maintenance techniques, but they involve different functions and distinct procedures. Repointing focuses on restoring the structural integrity of a brick wall by removing deteriorated mortar and replacing it with new mortar that matches the original in composition, colour, and texture. The primary goal is to strengthen the masonry and prevent water infiltration.

On the other hand, tuckpointing aims to enhance both the structure and the visual appearance of a brick wall. This technique involves filling the joints with a mortar that matches the bricks and then overlaying a thin line of contrasting mortar to create the illusion of perfectly aligned joints. While both methods involve removing and replacing old mortar, tuckpointing is generally more labour-intensive and costly due to its focus on aesthetic detail and structural reinforcement.
